ID Alert: Computer security incident

One or more unauthorized intruders recently breached several computers on the Business & Financial Services network at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). The intruders utilized at least one of these computers for illegal file storage. However, personal information, such as name and Social Security number or driver’s license number, was present on these machines and could have been viewed.

There is no evidence that this personal data was accessed or extracted. However, as a precaution, UCSD is sending letters to everyone whose information was stored on these machines, with instructions on how to protect against potential fraud and identity theft. Among those who may be affected:

  • Current and former UCSD students
  • Individuals who applied for UCSD admission but never attended
  • Some current and former faculty and staff
